A Festival From the Heart
ARISE Music Festival 2014
Fr
An unannounced theme of consciousness, respectfulness, responsibility, and a genuinely positive attitude from all involved created the transformational celebration known as ARISE Music Festival. Only in its' second year, this gathering was tailored for everyone, consisting of music, art, yoga, camping, workshops, films, dance, as well as areas designed specifically for children and elders.
Set in the heavenly landscapes of Colorado, ARISE was hosted on the organic terrain of the Sunrise Ranch in Loveland, CO. With lush green meadows, a still, mirrored lake, rugged red rock formations, and 350 acres of ground to explore, this sacred plot truly stimulated all senses.
“Let’s celebrate who we are,” announced David Karchere, the Spiritual Director of the land. “Take care of ourselves, others, and our earth. Leave a mark of beauty and kindness. Provide guidance to our lost youth; after all this is a festival that allows you to find who you are. This is sacred land, we are all sacred people, we are water, I am happy.”
FRIDAY
Welcoming us to the land, blessing the surrounding waters, and drumming to activate our inner peaceful warriors, the opening ceremony set positive intentions for this collaboration to unravel. A brief rain cleansed the land, and refreshed all souls.
Opening the gates of love for a weekend of blissful encounters at the Crown Chakra Yoga Tent was Alec Rouben and friends with a Love Life Vinyasa Flow class allowing the participants to ground themselves and root into the land. A well-spoken instructor with beautiful organization and harmonious instrumentals provided by musician and artist, Chapin Mathews, allowed for this set to flow freely.
This event was a vision; a community driven masterpiece inviting anyone and everyone to come create and celebrate. With loving motives, and positive energy, this high vibrational jamboree really breached the confines of your standard music festival template. The mindfulness approach of every single creator was present and on point, allowing for growth and expansion through all.
“Restore our connection to earth,” spoke passionate musician and activist, Bethany Yarrow. “This is not a “tune out festival,” but a mission for our survival and collective existence. The way to people’s hearts is through music, and we will only win, if all of us win.”
If you took a second to glance away from the out-of-this-world musical acts, informative speakers, educational workshops, hypnotizing art, or energetic yoga classes this weekend and looked at the ground; did you notice anything? No? Didn’t think so…Just a simple observation that may have been overlooked; THERE WAS ZERO TRASH! With garbage receptacles, and recycling and compost stations clearly positioned around the grounds, the ranch stayed pristine throughout the experience. Following the conscious thread, the festival was equipped with organic, raw, vegan, and gluten free food vendors such as SolTribe. Water refill stations were located everywhere, GMO awareness educators, such as ‘Right to Know,’ the ‘Goddess Garden Organics’ ladies offering FREE organic sunscreen to anyone who was willing to trade in their chemical lotion, as well as activists reaching out to share and educate others with their knowledge and beliefs.

This eventful three day assembly gave everyone the tools and guidance to explore within themselves offering a vast array of activities throughout the weekend. With a slew of assorted workshops to choose from including sessions pertaining to energies, holistic practices and living naturally, chakra work, drumming lessons, dream analyzing, and heaps of others, there was always free knowledge flowing.
Quantum Reality with Shaun Parkins laid out a basic coherence into the quantum field. Integrating the group to begin to understand the adaptive reactions to response and interact in higher levels of engagement while feeling embodiment and bringing awareness to the energetic body. Shaun incorporated an interactive energy transfer experiment using popsicle sticks to demonstrate redirecting awareness and applying it to the present moment.
Casually placed between the food lounge and the vendor booths, the Starwater Stage and espresso bar hosted various acts of poetry, solo sets, collaborations, and provided space for anyone who wanted to have fun and make beautiful sounds together to do so. Friday afternoon, the Gaia Experiment blending into an Organix Jam really set the stage for a magical evening of music. Live painters complimented the crisp, refreshing tones of these free and expressive musicians. Playing from the heart, this group displayed such visual comfort in their on stage presence giving off a casual and natural vibe while holding an earthy and organic undertone. They opened the stage for collaboration inviting anyone to come join in and play creating a caveman funk-rock super jam. This improvisational experimentation allowed members of the crowd to hone in and let go. The R.L Children’s Parade graced the café with their presence incorporating the sounds of our inner child to the mix.
“ARISE is an extension of a house party,” said Paul Bassis, the Produce of ARISE. “Music brings us together, but we are more than that. Strip away the art, you find the heart of an activist. We are part of something much greater. Wake up, then ARISE.”
With an afternoon slot on the main Eagle Stage, Musketeer Gripweed, took flow-rock to another level. Traditional, but fresh these musicians demonstrated heavy progression into funky, fun lash outs, mellowing out to spacey bluegrass. Their catchy vocals and ability to transcend into a variety of genres set these boys apart. A strong, energetic finish capped off this 45 minutes of musical mayhem.
“Be the change, don’t wait, do, live,” advocated Xiuhtezcatl Tonatiuh, Youth Director and lyricist of Earth Guardians.
This world-soul-hop assembly of environmental activists and musicians are pioneering a conscious, liberating, and powerfully educational on stage experience. While playing music and spreading positivity, respect, and truth through our cores and to our younger generation, this 14 year old is on point. They are educating our population through music to make the movement known and comprehendible. Channeling so much energy, this being is connecting us to nature and spreading awareness with the help from his six year-old brother, sister Jasmine, and tribe of musicians and friends. This group was highly respected at the festival with their welcoming flow and constructive messages. With the privilege of two short sets throughout the weekend, these souls made every second count and provided all in attendance healthy, happy, sustainable world solutions and information. A real highlight of the festival.
Paving the way for dance funk rock, this Guatemalan group, Kan’Nal, holds community respect in Colorado. Utilizing worldly visuals with a classy mix of landscape shots and cosmic additions along with the smooth, jammy, and collected tribal sounds of these passionate musicians created one wicked dance party. They sure know how to unleash the rage with a dark psychedelic tone blending into slowed and mysterious transitions.
Denver locals, Tatanka, a four-piece reggae band grabbed a dual spot on the B-Well Phoenix Stage, opening and closing for Tribal Seeds. A modern classic; the uplifting, relaxed flow of their pungent space funk and electronic additions like their tasteful glitch reggae fusion provided that “can’t help but dance” vibe.
Set in the peaceful quarters of the grassy plateau, the yoga tent welcomed Ayla Nereo Friday evening. In a story time setting with the whole crowd sitting, the pleasant, soft, gentle, powerful, and perfectly harmonized voice of Miss Nereo engulfed the space. Making use of her hands and facial expressions, she just let it all out. Such gentle, yet sharp and precise flow radiated seamlessly. Focused and in tune, Ayla’s energy just shines.
Setting the pace for the evening, the feel good group, Tribal Seeds, took the stage for their dinner time set. Starting off strong with heavy and deep bass waves, moving into a strong energetic super funk jam, these guys play real, authentic, quality reggae music, and love doing so. Their flawless consistency sets them apart. Maintaining a mellow vibe throughout their set, yet allowing to veer and regain control puts these gentlemen in a category of their own.
Groundation performed with shear brilliance; a beautiful, soulful presentation of sounds. All trumpets in sync. The female vocalist took charge and let her heart sing; a genuine convergence from soul to ear. This presentation was a real masterpiece of the festival.
Following, with a tough slot to fill after the grand enthusiasm brought by Groundation, Beats Antique, had no problem taking charge. Creating such a party on stage, these humans love to have fun, and just happen to play music. With their ‘no worries’ style of making music, these guys and gal demonstrate such a level of comfort on stage. Their upbeat, energetic, and catchy tracks mold seamlessly into each other, creating a carnival of love revolving round n’ round. Sneaking in their Les Claypool remix, ‘Beelzebub,’ really solidified their intent for the show. This circus of musicians supply a truly unique sound, incorporating experimental electronic worldly beats and movements into their celebration.
Mr. Polish Ambassador, Sir. You my good sir are one fun dude! Your closing slot Friday evening was “finger poking good,” raved a loving, overjoyed fan. Perma-smiles for days. With such playful energy, and an entertaining nature this man loves to make himself laugh and bring utter hilarity to his force field. Just dancing and having a blast, this disco-funk god is a party animal at heart. Poking his index finger to the sky and shaking his head in pure bliss, it just didn’t seem like he could have been any happier, until the beautiful Ayla Nereo joined him on stage for a dance party duo. The connection between these two musicians was undeniable, complimenting each other’s talent and flowing effortlessly in tune with each other. A wandering balloon made its way into the Ambassador’s aura, and when he went to direct it to another dimension…poof, it burst, startling the man. Treating the viewers to some sampled remixes such as: Akon- ‘Locked up,’ and Michael Jackson’s ‘Beat It,’ brought everyone together, singing, dancing, and laughing.
“Gatherings such as these function as a portal,” spoke peaceful Hope Medford, percussionist with Medicine for the People. “It is a rite of passage. The music, the land, the super moon; it’s difficult not to be changed. Gathering on this land that holds such good intention and the consciousness of this party at the time may hit on a subconscious level, but provides a huge opportunity for a consciousness shift later on down the road. This space also allows for cross pollination, to be open-minded and to create opportunity. Humans in a happy place will evolve.”
SATURDAY
There s nothing more hilariously comical, entertaining, amusing, and uproariously funny than laughter yoga to begin your day. Adults giggling like school children, geeking out at nothing, and laughing in nonstop hilarity are a few ways to describe what people passing by may have saw as they were beginning their Saturday morning routines. The bubbly instructor, Jen Lennon, kept the class fun, relaxed, and interactive allowing for an easy flow. Role playing scenarios like animal laughs, silent laughs, pretending you have just ran into a friend you haven't` seen in 43 months laugh, and a cocktail laugh skit. Laugh often.
A short stroll from the yoga tent, or an uphill stumble towards the rocks would have led you into the creative gateway of the artists’ gallery. This circular space housed many people’s expressions. With pieces of art ranging from paintings, drawings, wood work, glass work, burnings, etchings, and carvings, this was a special place to enter and lose yourself in someone else’s dream.
Painter, illustrator, visual artist, and musician, Chapin Mathews, says, “I believe everyone has a creative voice. Through my creativity, I help inspire others to find that voice.”
Mathews displayed his work in the gallery, as well as a live painting slot during Grateful Grass; his 21st festival live painting since 2010. He plans to further develop his style to incorporate space-scapes with geographic patterns, changing it up a bit, yet maintaining his techniques and methods at heart. To check out his art or just to say hey, he can be found at ChapinMathews.Blogspot.com.
The uplifting cheerful chants and conscious hip hop echoed from the Eagle stage early Saturday evening. The Wandering Monks are spreading positive messages, promoting awareness, and creating hype about issues and ways of living that are real and that matter. The lyrics were easy to understand and comprehend. They are involved in community outreach and activism programs and are making waves in the music scene while being recognized for their cognizant focus. Incorporating three vocalists, these musicians really work well together to honor each other, especially during ‘Spaghetti Western.’
“The only way to get it done is through love and inspiration,” spoke Peter Yarrow, the folk singer-songwriter, guitarist, and record producer affiliated with Peter, Paul, and Mary. “Use your mind, but let the heart lead first.”
The primetime collaboration of the Everyone Orchestra featuring Steve Kimock, an American Rock Musician, displayed such teamwork and on stage cooperation during their show, building relationships and playing off each other’s last note effortlessly. The expression and energy radiating from this collective of musicians was interplanetary. Conductor, Matt Butler, smoothly coordinated the entire presentation operating his dry erase board to pull all of the musicians to a centered focal point, while rocking his colorful third-eye top hat and customized white flare suit jacket. This traveling tribe is constantly revolving through oodles of talented musicians and forming brand new sounds wherever they end up.
From one ensemble to the next, the Infamous Stringdusters, threw a flat out party! Every member was constantly smiling throughout the entire show! They made such good use of the entire stage, blending their casual dance moves into their set; especially the upright bass player, Travis Book, spinning and twirling with his bass as if it was a feather. The on stage communication and visible connections and emotions between each of the members was precise and authentic. They really join together with one another to provide the most indisputable quality of tunes. The set came together flawlessly. Hands down, these guys LOVE to have FUN, and are doing a really swell job at what they love.
Galactic ran with the energy flooding from the Everyone Orchestra and Infamous Stringdusters’ sets. Producing a solid and rich tone as their constant with superior audio, the musical capacity and magnitude these musicians held was so crisp and clean in perfect harmony. Chali 2na & Lyrics Born graced the stage with their presence. Entering with dominance, fresh out the bag, these lyricists came out one at a time and didn’t waste any time spitting rhymes. Giving us the old school traditional hip hop routine by stimulating the crowd, searching for interaction, and then just losing it in a cyclone of lyrical poetry. This entire pack of veterans struck the heart chord here in the breathtaking Loveland Valley.
SUNDAY
The day of the super moon. Recharged. So much love, positivity, gratitude, and devotion surrounding this music festival.
“Curiosity may bring you here, but you have to figure out what your intentions are,” announced Nahko Bear of Medicine for the People. “Some come to learn, some come to party or listen to music, whether the intent is simple or deep, people are finding their content here. There is not just one kind of folk here. We are bridging that gap to this organic space and sharing it with our elders, tribal members, and children. I feel the energy here, and sense the holy sacred vortex. It’s what brought us all here.”
Sridaiva Yoga with Ian Maxwell. This comedic yogi shared his space in the yoga tent with quite a large group Sunday morning. Providing a super relaxed and fun environment, his style was casual and easy to follow. The participants had the ability to go at their own pace. He kept the attention of the group by cracking jokes and using humor to get everyone involved. He kept the set revolving and exciting, and would lay out some conventional festival humor, yet always collected himself after a nice laugh, and tied everything back into the practice seamlessly. He was very open and comfortable with himself, and it showed through his styles of instructing and channeling his guidance.
The movement in motion and positive vibrations at the Starwater Café drew in quite the lovely crowd for an early evening hoedown. Satsang, a conscious Montana reggae duo rooted in social change and environmental activism, held down the chilled out atmosphere of this festaurant. They supplied the pack a true representation of fun, boppy, reggae music. They are two guys that just love playing tunes. These mountain men were just playing music, listening to music, and sharing music, and all of a sudden it ended up in the hands of the talent scout buyer for the festival. Talk about synchronicities…
“This festival had a nice vibe last year, and we are honored to be able to share the stages with such great musicians and performers this time around,” said Drew McManus, guitarist, singer, and songwriter of Satsang. “It is a conscious gathering that happens to have great music. Last year nothing ever got weird or out of control. Everyone stayed focused and held their own, responsibly. I would imagine the same for this year.”
The powerful force of the super moon began to fuse into every being as the gentle rainwater purified this positively intoxicating property.
Slow down…collect yourself…breathe deeply…NOW DANCE YOUR BOOTY OFF! The Magic Beans out of Boulder, CO. just don’t stop, unless their on-stage hilarity builds up past breaking point, and then they still don’t stop, but just merge it all into their energetic and crisp performance. Their blues-funk-psych-grass style just shines through their instruments with such a laissez faire attitude. The ability of these musicians to soar right into these hardcore jams and inspirational riffs, and level out into a world of psychedelic peaceful melodies is up there with the talents of the legendary spirits of The String Cheese Incident and Phish.
These boys all have that divine western charm, and when united on stage they just pour out their hearts through these audio boxes we call speakers. The Magic Beans are truly a traditional symbol of that exquisite Boulder folk humor. With their ability to flow so nonchalantly and connect with each member of the crowd individually, as well as the deep on-stage interaction between themselves, these guys are truly on the right track. Their red solo cup energy caused everyone in attendance to have the best day ever; smiles for miles! The beautiful on-point melodies and soulful style mark these fellas’ as the true ‘American Jumping Beans of Funk!’ Another blessing of this revolutionary event.
"A perfect container for participants to entertain and be entertained, explore their creative potentials, connect with nature, stretch out, dive in, and dance to the wee hours."

Peter Yarrow and friends brought this element of unity to the stage. With the organized chaos of love, awareness, and truth, this musical family gathered the tribe for the acceptance of the, ‘Uplifting the World through Music’ award. Their power and gratitude ignited a special energy that welcomed Nahko and Medicine for the People effortlessly.
This stellar collective was offered a 'Global Peace Flag' at the end of their show last year at ARISE, presented by a Japanese Monk named, Yamato. Taking the first beginning moments to hone in and establish a foundation, easing into their environment, and channeling their energies out into the cosmos, Medicine for the People, truly shared such in depth and positive messages regarding advancing human consciousness, caring for our planet, connecting and loving one another while establishing our inner peace. This high energy and informative set unleashed such encouraging emotion. These brothers and sisters are doing life! They know exactly when and where to let loose and rage on stage! There is such intensely high energy when these musicians collaborate and play music together, yet they always collect themselves and really have the ability to direct their force tranquilly. Their worldly, tribal, peaceful, and intelligent style set them apart from your average jam band.
Making a potent appearance, Xiuhtezcatl Tonatiuh, Youth Director for the Earth Guardians, accompanied the Medicine crew for a brief but impactful moment. Rapping in Spanish, this young man takes the stage with such a present attitude and confidence. Speaking the truth, and sharing his passion with others, Xiuhtezcatl, made quite the influential addition this evening.
Percussionist, Hope Medford, taps into the vibe everywhere she plays, customizing her style in every different situation. She has this ability to let loose, escaping from this expected persona and feeling the music at such a deep level, allowing her to radiate her loving vibration to each individual. This divine and powerful woman contributes such a focused energy to this group of finely tuned musicians, really interlacing the entire band. These guys are one of a kind, and you never know where they will end up! Trust the divine flow, and “stay humble,” follow your heart, and these guys are bound to end up playing music on a stage, picnic table, van, or grassy knoll near you sooner than you think…
“Every time we play I connect with the land first,” shared Hope. “I enjoy being in the fire region and sinking into this land. Plus, I love Colorado. That vibration just naturally comes through my drums with the relationship of the land itself, and the people that show up.”
Positivity and enchantment flowed right through the Medicine and ended up in the grass.
“We are gonna’ play Grateful Dead songs...bluegrass style,” Keller Williams said casually. “If you don’t like the Grateful Dead…well then…that’s what’s going on here until 1AM...”
Grateful Grass featuring Keller Williams, Bill Nershi, Reid Mathis, and Allie Kral did exactly what Mr. Williams told you they were going to do…play gosh darn Dead songs all night, with that bluegrass spin. With an alternating array of musicians, the ARISE squad for this Grateful Grass set knew exactly how to get every single person on the grounds dancing like children, sliding their bare feet through the whisker-like grass, and double clicking their heals out of pure joy. Holding such beautifully harmonized synchronization between these members on this brisk August evening, their love for music, bluegrass, and the Grateful Dead simply radiated. The pleasure this cooperative receives solely from playing music for others is so raw and true. Covering an original from King Radio, Keller led the group in ‘Man Smart, Woman Smarter.’ This replica was so tastefully done; even the men were singing the lyrics. Closing out the festival on the Eagle Stage, they threw one heck of a good ol’ fashioned hoedown, a regular 'jamboree de’ carnival.'
“ARISE is a hub, a community, collectively evolving and creating consciousness evolution,” spoke Xiuhtezcatl. “It is a movement through music, but it’s not only what happens here that matters, it is what you take home with you and what you do after you leave to keep the movement alive and growing. It is up to us!”
A transformational celebration to say the least. ARISE Music Festival on the Sunrise Ranch in Loveland, CO. was so much more than a music festival; it was a collaboration, a collective of people doing what they love and wanting to share that love with the planet. Music truly has the ability to bring us into the present moment and really feel this magical vibration we title life.
The music industry has a powerful voice and massive following, with music festivals serving as outlets and a catalyst for this industry to relay messages and spread information that can be weaved into everyday life. The impact musicians and event coordinators have on fans, attendees, and people around the world is immense and influential as well as a great opportunity to extend awareness into the universe.
ARISE AROSE! This legendary gathering was customized to fit everyone's desires. With flawless organization and a friendly, helpful staff this event came together perfectly. The levels of respect, responsibility, consciousness, and genuine attitudes are what really made this festival stand out. As well as the hand selected lineup of musicians, artists, workshops, yoga classes, films, healers, presenters, and much more. It was so beautiful to see everyone cherishing the land and showing gratitude for the opportunity to play on the ranch. The grounds remained spotless all weekend! Loaded with organic food options, and chemical free body products, ARISE, paved the way for mindful musical events. A huge thanks to everyone involved with this magical project.
